Plant, nurture, grow—enjoy!

Can kids have fun learning about science, technology, and life in general? Yes, if they become Junior Master Gardeners! A pilot project conducted last year proved that when youth get involved with gardening, they can increase their knowledge and skills while becoming interested in the horticulture industry.
Last year, six counties—Clearwater, Crow Wing, Olmsted, Sherburne, Stearns, and Winona—were selected as pilot sites. Students participated in a variety of projects, including science experiments and community service projects.
• 125 youths enrolled; 97 completed the entire project
• 87 youths were new to the 4-H program
• Participant ages ranged from elementary to high school, depending on the projects
This pilot project was implemented in 2009 by the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener program in collaboration with extension's youth development program and Minnesota 4-H, with funding from a Minnesota Nursery & Landscaping Association Foundation Research and Education grant.
