Michelle Christopherson loves researching early American history—and producing artifacts that are true to that time period. So one of her handmade dolls, appropriately made in the likeness of Abraham Lincoln, hold a copy of the Pledge to the Flag, but it may not be the pledge that you’re familiar with. This one is the original pledge first published in 1892.

According to many sources, the author of the original Pledge to the Flag is unknown, although it was most likely Francis Bellamy. Over the decades, the pledge’s evolution reflects the changes in the society it has come to represent. Words were changed and added in 1923, 1924, and 1954.
