HEALTH: May I Have an Antibiotic, Please?
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers these tips for proper use of antibiotics:
Learn when antibiotics are appropriate—and when they are not. Taking antibiotics for viral infections, such as a cold, cough, or acute bronchitis:
- will not cure the infection;
- will not keep other people from getting sick;
- will not help you feel better;
- may cause unnecessary and harmful side effects.
The CDC also tells us: Do not demand antibiotics when a healthcare provider says they are not needed because they will not help treat your infection.
