THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE: Gathering Herbs
Although they are grown as perennials (lasting for several years) in other parts of the country, these herbs are considered annuals (only one season) here in Lake Country:
- Lavender: Semi-hardy; over-winters in mild years. Try “Munstead” or “Hidcote” varieties and mulch in late fall.
- Lemon balm: The lemon-tasting leaves make good tea. Best used fresh, as it loses its flavor when dried.
- Lemon verbena: The finest herb for a strong lemon flavor and scent.
- Rosemary: Used in cooking, its leaves have a penetrating, resinous sap.
